So I decided to carve this after all! Check out the before and after of the carving action. I procrastinated this (as per usual) and then got worried it was getting too dry. I think if I waited another few days it might have been too dry to finish! 😮‍💨.

I’m working on a series of larger vases, and I’m really enjoying how this one is coming along. I’ll do a bit more refining on the shape, but it’s getting close!

Working with bigger amounts of clay on the wheel has made me realize just how competitive and self-critical I can be. I know I sometimes put pressure on myself unnecessarily, but I also appreciate how it pushes me—and hopefully helps me make better and better work. I just hope it doesn’t drive me completely crazy 🤦🏻🤪

The truth is… not as long as you’d think! Carving is kind of a race against time because the clay is constantly drying—even as I work. If I take too long, it gets too dry and the lines start to drag or chip. But if I start too early, when it’s still too wet, the details aren’t as crisp and clean .

So my answer is usually: it takes as long as it takes for the clay to dry 😂

I’ll be firing more work than possibly I have ever fired at one time so it’s exciting, and a little bit (a lot) scary, to see them come out the kiln less than a week before the fest!
