 BIO

Stephen discovered clay in 2004 at CCSF studying with Don Santos, a seasoned production potter as well as a number of other exceptional ceramicists.  Working as a lab tech provided him with a wealth of information and experience in and around the ceramic studio. He then moved to Brooklyn, NY where he worked as a studio assistant, instructor and employee at a small private studio, the Painted Pot.  Returning to the Bay Area, Stephen continued making work and teaching classes at The Clay Underground, Clay By The Bay, Clayroom SF, and other studios in the area.  Over time, Stephen has come to focus more on surface treatment techniques such as sgraffito, and rely less on traditional wheel thrown utilitarian forms.

In 2018, partnering with Anna Krengel, Stephen reopened, in a new location, Merritt Ceramics, a community driven pottery studio offering classes and more in Oakland, CA, in an effort to provide creative outlets to the Lake Merritt area of Oakland.
